One of my favourite Thai food and a good quick and affordable hearty meal. It is more common to use ground pork, but you can use ground beef or chicken if you can’t consume pork.
Ingredients:
- 6 birds eye chili
- 6 to 10 garlic
- Pork minced (or beef if you can’t consume pork)
- Oyster sauce, dark soy sauce & fish sauce
- Sugar
- Ajinamoto/ MSG
- Thai basil leaves
- Chopped snake beans (optional)
How to cook Pad Kra Pao:
- Pound the garlic and birds eye chili in your granite/ stone spice crusher.
- Heat about 1 cm of vegetable oil in a small non-stick pan/ wok over medium high heat. Saute the pounded chili and garlic in the pan until the garlic starts to turn golden.
- Add the minced pork (or beef) and toss until they’re no longer in big clumps.
- Add your chopped snake beans (optional), then some dark soy sauce, oyster sauce and a dash of fish sauce before sprinkling MSG or Ajinamoto and a dash of sugar.
- When it’s almost done, add Thai basil leave and fry all miced pork/ beef for another 3 minutes.

Serve the minced pork on top of a bowl of white rice and top it with a fried egg. It’s a simple meal perfect for a gentle night with friends and family.
