Ema Datshi – Chili Cheese from Bhutan

Ema datshi is the national dish of Bhutan, it is chili cheese (literally). A good warm gravy-like texture, slightly salty and cheesy that fits very well when mixing it with rice or a good mash.

Ingredients:

  • 2 to 3 sliced green chilli
  • 1/2 onion (can be red or brown)
  • 3 cloves of minced garlic
  • 6 to 8 slices of cheese of your choice
  • 1 cup of water
  • Salt and pepper

Instructions:

  1. Heat a pan and add normal cooking oil (vegetable cooking oil). Add the sliced onion, chillies, and chopped garlic. Give them a quick toss before adding 1 cup of water.
  2. Season them with salt before adding slices of cheese to the pan.
  3. Turn off the flame and stir the mixture. Let the cheese melt in the residual heat.

When done, serve it over a bed of rice or mash potato!
