Hearty and simple meal, suitable for any occasion or time!
For the Gyudon
- ½ onion
- Some green onion
- ½ lb thinly sliced beef (chuck or ribeye) – best to buy from the Asian grocer
- 2 cups of rice (for 2 to 3 persons)
- 2 eggs
For the Sauce
- ½ cup dashi
- 2 Tbsp sake
- 2 Tbsp mirin (or use 2 Tbsp sake/water + 2 tsp sugar)
- 3 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp sugar/ brown sugar (to taste)
How to cook Gyudon:

- Slice the onion thinly then cut some green onions/scallions diagonally into thin slices. Set everything aside.
- In a large frying pan under medium heat, add ½ cup dashi, 2 tbsp sake, 2 tbsp mirin, 2 tbsp soy sauce, and 1 tbsp of sugar/ brown sugar.
- Next, add the onion slices to the pan and spread them. Cook the onion for about 2 to 3 minutes.
- Then, add the beef slices on top of the onions. Separate the thin slices of beef so the meat covers the onions evenly.
- Cover the pan with a lid and continue to cook on medium heat for 3 to 4 minutes.
- Beaten 2 eggs and add the eggs to your pan, cover it for about 1 to 2 minutes.
- Add your rice in large donburi bowls. Put the beef and onion mixture on top of the rice and drizzle additional remaining sauce on top.

The simple hearty dish served with hot rice is perfect for a quick lunch or dinner!
